<b><br /></b>
<b>What Paints and Powders are compatible with Galvanizing?</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
A partial listing of available paint, paint systems,</div>
<div>
and powder coatings that are compatible with</div>
<div>
galvanizing are listed in the following table. The<br />
paint manufacturer can provide more thorough<br />
information about the compatibility of specific<br />
systems with galvanized steel. Always consult<br />
the paint manufacturer prior to painting galvanized<br />
steel. Different physical and chemical characteristics<br />
for the same types of paint may have varied reactions<br />
with a galvanized surface. The paint manufacturer and</div>
<div>
galvanizer can assist in the creation of a successful</div>
<div>
duplex system.<br />

<div>
Before deciding how to protect steel from</div>
<div>
corrosion, it is important to understand how steel</div>
<div>
corrodes. Corrosion takes place because of</div>
<div>
differences in electrical potential between small</div>
<div>
areas on the steel surface that become anodic and</div>
<div>
cathodic. When an electrolyte connects the anodes</div>
<div>
to the cathodes, a corrosion cell is created.</div>
<div>
Moisture in the air forming condensation on the</div>
<div>
steel surface is the most common electrolyte. In</div>
<div>
the electrolyte, a small electrical current begins to</div>
<div>
flow. The iron ions produced at the anode</div>
<div>
combine with the environment to form the loose,</div>
<div>
flaky iron oxide known as rust.</div>
<div>
In order to protect steel from corrosion,</div>
<div>
something must interfere with the corrosion cell,</div>
<div>
either by blocking the electrolyte or by becoming</div>
<div>
the anode. Two common methods of corrosion</div>
<div>
protection are cathodic protection (the formation</div>
<div>
of another anode) and barrier protection (blocking</div>
<div>
the electrolyte from the steel surface). Hot-dip</div>
<div>
galvanizing alone affords both types of protection,</div>
<div>
and painting or powder coating over hot-dip galvanizing<br />
adds an additional barrier layer on top of the zinc coating,<br />
thus enhancing the protection afforded to the steel. Duplex<br />
coatings also offer the element of color to your project,<br />
making it more aesthetically pleasing.<br />
<br />
Fortress Fusion Coatings specializes in duplex coatings,<br />
specifically in powder coating over galvanizing. We<br />
would be happy to discuss your project with you and<br />
answer any questions you may have.<br />

<div>
Poor adhesion of paint or powder coating to galvanized<br />
parts is a common issue - but it doesn't need to be.<br />
There are a few factors that affect the adhesion between<br />
the surfaces. One of these factors is the post-treatment of </div>
<div>
the galvanized steel.<br />
<br />
After a piece of steel has been galvanized,<br />
it is sometimes quenched or treated by the<br />
galvanizer, in order to halt the reaction<br />
between the iron and zinc (and to facilitate<br />
immediate shipment of the galvanized steel).</div>
<div>
The most common post-treatments are<br />
water quenching and chromate quenching,</div>
<div>
<br />
Both quenching methods (water and</div>
<div>
chromate) can adversely affect the</div>
<div>
bond between the galvanized steel</div>
<div>
and the paint or powder coating, causing<br />
adhesion issues. Communicating with the<br />
galvanizer prior to galvanizing helps avoid<br />
post-treatments that can be detrimental to<br />
paint or powder adhesion.<br />
<br />
At Fortress Fusion Coatings, we are very familiar with the factors affecting proper<br />
adhesion between galvanized steel and paint or powder coating. If you have any<br />
questions about this, or any other coating-related issue, we would be happy to<br />
discuss it with you. Please give us a call:<br />

Duplex systems, as we define them, are materials that<br />
have been painted or powder coated after galvanizing.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Each individual project raises unique reasons as</div>
<div>
to why a duplex system should be utilized, and the</div>
<div>
advantages for choosing to do so are many:</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<b>E</b><b>xtended Corrosion Resistance</b></div>
<br />
<div>
The most obvious and most important reason for</div>
<div>
using a duplex system, is the added corrosion</div>
<div>
protection it provides. Other systems<br />
simply can't match the corrosion resistance</div>
<div>
provided by painting or powder coating<br />
over hot-dip galvanized steel.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Synergistic Effect</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It’s typical for a duplex system to provide</div>
<div>
corrosion protection 1.5-2.5 times longer than</div>
<div>
the sum of the lifetime of zinc or paint, used</div>
<div>
individually. For example, if a galvanized coating</div>
<div>
is expected to be maintenance-free for 40 years</div>
<div>
and a paint system is expected to last ten years,</div>
<div>
galvanizing and paint combined should protect the</div>
<div>
steel substrate for at least 75 years, or 1.5 times the</div>
<div>
sum of both systems.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Economic Benefit</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Because duplex systems greatly extend the</div>
<div>
service life of a product, maintenance costs are</div>
<div>
significantly decreased. Additionally, a product</div>
<div>
lasts longer before it must be replaced, thus</div>
<div>
decreasing the life-cycle cost. The cost of a</div>
<div>
product that has been protected by galvanizing and</div>
<div>
painting or powder coating, is lower over the entire<br />
life of the product than most single system methods<br />
of corrosion protection.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<b>Ease of Repainting</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As the paint film weathers, the zinc in the</div>
<div>
galvanized coating is present to provide both</div>
<div>
cathodic and barrier protection, until the structure</div>
<div>
is repainted. The exposed zinc surface then can </div>
<div>
be repainted with minimal surface preparation.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Aesthetics</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Galvanizing has an attractive metallic-gray</div>
<div>
appearance, suitable for a myriad of applications,</div>
<div>
but painting or powder coating can offer aesthetic<br />
advantages. One might choose to paint over a<br />
galvanized coating so that a project matches its<br />
specific environment—such as a stadium, theme<br />
park, or natural habitat.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<b><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723102134652300402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJy1klQTg4HAntzdVLvTzy5GojhMq0BpdsqPAowSE-vS1kG_ZQu5q7sZ3KxtBGIg2lp-XXhvw7i1uK6kjzJ7NBv3OdyQU6YpU1rmNVuIr3eXFrUycI8EQj5cWd4GPEUOXozIYx8df9xMlR/s200/1.png" style="cursor: pointer; float: left; height: 200px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 0px; width: 108px;" /></b></div>
<div>
<b>Safety Marking</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A duplex system of galvanized</div>
<div>
steel and paint or powder coating<br />
may be used to conform to safety<br />
regulations. For example, the Federal</div>
<div>
Aviation Administration (FAA)</div>
<div>
requires structures over 200 feet</div>
<div>
tall to be painted in the alternating<br />
pattern of white and orange.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<b>Color Coding</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Painting or powder coating over galvanized steel<br />
also increases safety in many environments, by<br />
color-coding gas, steam, or chemical pipes,<br />
identifying hazardous work areas and walkways,<br />
and marking high-voltage electrical lines and<br />
equipment.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Extending the Life of Previously Galvanized Steel</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Paint is a logical choice to extend the life of</div>
<div>
galvanized structures, once the zinc coating has</div>
<div>
substantially and naturally weathered away.</div>
<div>
Instead of being completely replaced, the</div>
<div>
galvanized structure can easily be painted,</div>
<div>
extending its useful life. Organic zinc-rich paints</div>
<div>
are specifically suited to this application.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Repair of Hot-dip Galvanized Steel</b><br />
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Zinc-rich paints can also be used to touch-up and</div>
<div>
repair damaged areas on a galvanized coating, in</div>
<div>
order to comply with ASTM A 780, Repair of</div>
<div>
Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip</div>
<div>
Galvanized Coatings. Repairing a galvanized</div>
<div>
coating will significantly extend the useful life of</div>
<div>
a product.</div>
</div>

A duplex system is simply</div><div>painting or powder coating steel that has been</div><div>hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. When paint</div><div>and hot-dip galvanizing are used together, the</div><div>corrosion protection is superior to either</div><div>protection system used alone.</div><div>Painting galvanized steel requires careful</div><div>preparation and a good understanding of both</div><div>painting and galvanizing. (WKTV)</b> - Steel is an important metal found everywhere you look from buildings, to cars, to guardrails.<br /><br />One plant in Yorkville works day in and out to treat steel through a process called galvanizing that keeps metal from rusting.<br /><br />Hubbell Galvanizing opened up their doors on Friday, September 24 to give tours to the public and let them in on what goes on at the facility.<br /><br />The President of Hubbell Galvanizing, Daniel Hubbell, is the third generation to run the business that opened in 1925. The facility on Commercial Drive East is the largest of five galvanizing plants in the state, and it operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year.<br /><br />Through a series of chemical baths metals are brought together in a melting pot to create a product that doesn't rust, the process is called galvanizing.<br />The company also has a power coating facility to give the material color, if the client requests it.<br /><br />Around 80 people are employed at the site, among them the largest number of master galvanizers on the continent. While 65 percent of their business comes from New York State, it is the out of state orders that help keep the business profitable.<br /><br />Hubbell says three generations ago, Utica was a great place to do business and 85 years later still consider it to be, because the cost of living is low and the labor pool is strong.<br /><br />"We are dealing with 10,000 pound loads of steel and the men work with molten metal, acid that is battery strength, and it is a very tough place to work," Hubbell said. "My men move somewhere between 500 and 800 pounds an hours, and that's more than you're going to get at a gym."<br /><br />The company wants the Central New York community to know that their industry is here to stay, and they take every precaution to work safely. </div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzHHBLN9VxK2kgwoqpGz2ADBiX6XkXuBwgH2u0H39pT9pBjyYpMwvwWHwQ8rp6CzNYYTaLbxV_96ng5XgBhLg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Galvanizing Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07319693975041063466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8322474119452671239.post-25640999859303051302010-09-03T12:38:00.000-07:002010-09-03T12:44:30.444-07:00STEEL DAY SEPTEMBER 24TH<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeDYHtR8gnJvYnhoCQLom9Urkm2kNWDNtWcWlKzLDTNyJVKlQjx0-w4_Zw81KUR3ZCMM6QyUfisddPSMwF33zU1pmIkByivYwyrWFl5OR4mkRGgVc8EwNXGU96a_isBxjfA8-QLFDXYdMC/s1600/SteelDay_PartnerWeb.gif"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 156px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeDYHtR8gnJvYnhoCQLom9Urkm2kNWDNtWcWlKzLDTNyJVKlQjx0-w4_Zw81KUR3ZCMM6QyUfisddPSMwF33zU1pmIkByivYwyrWFl5OR4mkRGgVc8EwNXGU96a_isBxjfA8-QLFDXYdMC/s200/SteelDay_PartnerWeb.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512774828850867474" border="0" /></a><br />September 24th is National Steel Day 2010. A catered dinner from Piggy Pats followed.Galvanizing Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07319693975041063466noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8322474119452671239.post-69550168175773079102010-01-25T20:41:00.000-08:002010-01-25T20:45:16.098-08:00Fortress Fusion Coatings Inc Process<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='380' height='316' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxUbBhKX0MEXCz38fY6asatZXTF71laBR0RvtdElJkZ4yfRoDlTy6sqBMuPJXwrf-ut1kl6PDbbb6FsJEP_sw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8322474119452671239.post-79927792903227181642010-01-25T08:13:00.000-08:002010-02-16T12:15:40.778-08:00New oven expands Fortress Fusion capacityWe just went operational on a new oven that will greatly improve our efficiency and productivity, allowing us to reduce turnaround times and lead to quicker deliveries of our products.<br /><br />The second oven arrived on Dec. 10, and we turned it on just in time for the new year. Both ovens are nearly 45 feet long and 9 feet high, so we can fit any piece that would fit on a tractor trailer.<br /><br />The powder coating process - if done right - requires two stints in an oven. One to bring the metal up to temperature so the powder adheres correctly, and one to actually bake the powder onto the metal.<br /><br />Previously, we had to put pieces in the oven to warm them up, move them to the spray chamber to coat them, then return them to the oven to bake the powder on. Because the processes are for different durations and different temperatures, we could start a new batch unless the old batch was finished.<br /><br />Now we can. We're not sure how much faster will be able to produce projects, but it's going to be a big improvement.<br /><br />And a safer one, too. One of the advantages of a second oven is that product will always move in one direction through our shop, so our employees never need to worry about getting blind-sided by a piece of metal coming from a direction they didn't expect.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8322474119452671239.post-35457083919458036402010-01-25T08:07:00.000-08:002010-01-25T08:15:52.713-08:00Greek Peak ski resort opens year-round water park<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1KxMUxj4IH6cZeCxUYrN0IheS61RwbTA-1FELnwKp0MA7XpXbv_cMfTOXCW41xadTfoXpV-rSBWu_3S2ZcD4has6KdtiRp7oJGaUbfLi_noQbQxUBAl53E17YV3AsOHv8sF-3jQD-Sp0/s1600-h/waterpark_100_4330.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1KxMUxj4IH6cZeCxUYrN0IheS61RwbTA-1FELnwKp0MA7XpXbv_cMfTOXCW41xadTfoXpV-rSBWu_3S2ZcD4has6KdtiRp7oJGaUbfLi_noQbQxUBAl53E17YV3AsOHv8sF-3jQD-Sp0/s320/waterpark_100_4330.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430711882857000706" border="0" /></a>Cascades Indoor Water Park opened in December in Cortland County, N.Y., bringing something new to Central New York – year-round water fun, without the ice. At a ski resort.<br /><br />And we’re pleased not only with the quality of our work, but with what our work made possible.<br /><br />Fortress Fusion provided most of the exterior for the all-steel building, and some of the interior metal pieces. It looks good, sure, and it will last for generations, but we suspect the facility was able to open in December specifically because of the choice to go with powder coat instead of paint.<br /><br />Upstate New York has a short construction season – maybe four months. And the 2009 season was shortened incredibly because of a record number of rainy days.<br /><br />You can’t paint an exterior building on a rainy day. And even after the rain stops, you have to wait for the surfaces to dry.<br /><br />But with powder coating, we prepared each piece in our own indoor facility. We can do that rain or shine, day or night.<br /><br />And once they were ready, we shipped them to Cortland County, where they could be assembled immediately in any condition short of a lightning storm.<br />They didn’t have to wait for us, that’s for sure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
