WHY USE A DUPLEX SYSTEM?

Duplex systems, as we define them, are materials that
have been painted or powder coated after galvanizing.

Each individual project raises unique reasons as
to why a duplex system should be utilized, and the
advantages for choosing to do so are many:

Extended Corrosion Resistance

The most obvious and most important reason for
using a duplex system, is the added corrosion
protection it provides. Other systems
simply can't match the corrosion resistance
provided by painting or powder coating
over hot-dip galvanized steel.

Synergistic Effect

It’s typical for a duplex system to provide
corrosion protection 1.5-2.5 times longer than
the sum of the lifetime of zinc or paint, used
individually.  For example, if a galvanized coating
is expected to be maintenance-free for 40 years
and a paint system is expected to last ten years,
galvanizing and paint combined should protect the
steel substrate for at least 75 years, or 1.5 times the
sum of both systems.

Economic Benefit

Because duplex systems greatly extend the
service life of a product, maintenance costs are
significantly decreased.  Additionally, a product
lasts longer before it must be replaced, thus
decreasing the life-cycle cost. The cost of a
product that has been protected by galvanizing and
painting or powder coating, is lower over the entire
life of the product than most single system methods
of corrosion protection.

Ease of Repainting

As the paint film weathers, the zinc in the
galvanized coating is present to provide both
cathodic and barrier protection, until the structure
is repainted. The exposed zinc surface then can
be repainted with minimal surface preparation.

Aesthetics

Galvanizing has an attractive metallic-gray
appearance, suitable for a myriad of applications,
but painting or powder coating can offer aesthetic
advantages. One might choose to paint over a
galvanized coating so that a project matches its
specific environment—such as a stadium, theme
park, or natural habitat.

Safety Marking

A duplex system of galvanized
steel and paint or powder coating
may be used to conform to safety
regulations. For example, the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA)
requires structures over 200 feet
tall to be painted in the alternating
pattern of white and orange.

Color Coding

Painting or powder coating over galvanized steel
also increases safety in many environments, by
color-coding gas, steam, or chemical pipes,
identifying hazardous work areas and walkways,
and marking high-voltage electrical lines and
equipment.

Extending the Life of Previously Galvanized Steel

Paint is a logical choice to extend the life of
galvanized structures, once the zinc coating has
substantially and naturally weathered away.
Instead of being completely replaced, the
galvanized structure can easily be painted,
extending its useful life. Organic zinc-rich paints
are specifically suited to this application.

Repair of Hot-dip Galvanized Steel

Zinc-rich paints can also be used to touch-up and
repair damaged areas on a galvanized coating, in
order to comply with ASTM A 780, Repair of
Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip
Galvanized Coatings. Repairing a galvanized
coating will significantly extend the useful life of
a product.

DUPLEX SYSTEMS: Powder coating or Painting Over Hot-dip Galvanized Steel

INTRODUCTION
For years, protecting steel from corrosion
typically involved either the use of hot-dip
galvanizing or some type of paint system.
However, more and more corrosion specialists
are utilizing both methods of corrosion
protection in what is commonly referred to as a
duplex system. A duplex system is simply
painting or powder coating steel that has been
hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. When paint
and hot-dip galvanizing are used together, the
corrosion protection is superior to either
protection system used alone.
Painting galvanized steel requires careful
preparation and a good understanding of both
painting and galvanizing. Many products have
been galvanized and painted successfully for
decades; two examples are automobiles and radio
towers. Past experience provides excellent
historical data for how best to achieve good paint
adhesion. Studying past adhesion failures and
successes led galvanizers, paint companies,
researchers, paint contractors, and other sources to
create ASTM specification D 6386, Preparation of
Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coated Iron and Steel
Product and Hardware Surfaces for Painting.
When the galvanized surface is prepared correctly,
paint adhesion is excellent and the duplex system
becomes a highly successful method of corrosion
protection.

NATIONAL STEEL DAY OPEN HOUSE

OPEN HOUSE

September 23rd 10 AM TO 4 PM

O. W. Hubbell & Sons in concert with Di Highway and Hermosa Corporation invite the general public to an open house on September 23 at 5124 Commercial Drive East in Yorkville, NY.

O. W. Hubbell & Sons subsidiaries are Hubbell Galvanizing and Fortress Fusion. Hubbell Galvanizing provides a rugged, corrosion resistant coating to steel to prevent it from rust for 75 years or more. Fortress Fusion coats steel and aluminum surfaces with powder coating in virtually any color desired.
Hubbell also provides a metalized slip resistant coating called "Galvagrit®" for surfaces that require friction, such as stair treads. Hubbell also provides a grit blasting service to clean metal parts to bare metal.

Di Highway, is a DWBE certified supplier of fabricated steel. It is a source for guide railings, bridge railings and overhead sign structures. In addition, Di produces a variety of specialty products such as bridge scuppers, pedestrian/bicycle railings, flagpoles, snow/pedestrian fence brackets, and security barriers. Di is also an AISC certified steel fabricator.

Hermosa Corporation is a manufacturer of highway sign supports and traffic signs. Their primary products include: overhead sign structures, roadside sign supports, traffic signs & overhead and ground mounted sign panels, using aluminum and steel support systems. Hermosa also manufactures railings and decorative structural fences.

We will be explaining the Galvanizing Process to our visitors
before taking them on a plant tour of our facilities. The galvanizing,
powder coating, metalizing and blasting processes will be demonstrated.

Please join us on September 23rd for an excellent informational tour of our facility. We hope to see you.

Hardhats and safety glasses will be provided. Do not wear your good shoes. This is truly an industrial tour.

Note: No photographs for international competitive reasons.

National Steel Day

Local company opens its doors for National Steel Day

By CAROLINE GABLE

YORKVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Steel is an important metal found everywhere you look from buildings, to cars, to guardrails.

One plant in Yorkville works day in and out to treat steel through a process called galvanizing that keeps metal from rusting.

Hubbell Galvanizing opened up their doors on Friday, September 24 to give tours to the public and let them in on what goes on at the facility.

The President of Hubbell Galvanizing, Daniel Hubbell, is the third generation to run the business that opened in 1925. The facility on Commercial Drive East is the largest of five galvanizing plants in the state, and it operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Through a series of chemical baths metals are brought together in a melting pot to create a product that doesn't rust, the process is called galvanizing.
The company also has a power coating facility to give the material color, if the client requests it.

Around 80 people are employed at the site, among them the largest number of master galvanizers on the continent. While 65 percent of their business comes from New York State, it is the out of state orders that help keep the business profitable.

Hubbell says three generations ago, Utica was a great place to do business and 85 years later still consider it to be, because the cost of living is low and the labor pool is strong.

"We are dealing with 10,000 pound loads of steel and the men work with molten metal, acid that is battery strength, and it is a very tough place to work," Hubbell said. "My men move somewhere between 500 and 800 pounds an hours, and that's more than you're going to get at a gym."

The company wants the Central New York community to know that their industry is here to stay, and they take every precaution to work safely.
